~Why Too Can't Our Love?~~

The fall leaves afire with hues of oranges, reds and yellows
dance in the breeze.
Giving into the gentle winds
that flirt and tug at them,
they scuttle across the grass
and run every which way.
There is no hesitation nor worry
in the voyage or life of a leaf...
They are also absent of hope.
Their life goes on
as long as the seasons let them
and until their own bodies, brittle and broken with time,
disintegrate and become mulch.
Even then they will always be part of something.

Why too can't Our love?

Trees stand tall and firm,
roots spreading into the ground.
Their clothing grows and will fall off in the changing months
as the wind goes from a warm tickling
in one moment
to a frozen rushing the next.
Still, their growth is determined
by the seeds from where they came
and from a mixture of sun and rain.
They have no anxiety,
no fear of being left behind
or need to run away.
Time will leave rings upon rings inside of them
and only things man made
or lightning itself
can knock them down or drag them from their home.

Why too can't Our love?

In this world
there are few things that are for sure~
That we will live
and that we will die.
If we're lucky somewhere in between
someone will bring love into our heart
and a smile upon our face.
And if we are really lucky
we will do the same for that person.
Where hope is present so, too, can be love.
And where the disease
of misunderstanding and jealousy
is allowed to seep in
so too can regret.
A crack in our heart
where love escapes
is all that remains in great pain and questions.

Our fingerprints will, for all of our life,
forever be our fingerprints...
Our heart can be transplanted
and we can be given even
a man-made one
and yet the new one will not suddenly change
what is our favorite taste or smell,
the way we dance or sing
or how we love our family.
So please, can you explain why being in love can
disappear like smoke in the dark?

While the world and our bodies go on changing
and yet stay the same,
the very reason we came here can simply vanish
like a wave in the ocean
swallowed up by the surrounding water....
Funny though~
that water will still go on even when its no longer in the shape of that wave.

So, why God, why too can't Our love remain
even after our heart is broken?
Where does love go and how can something
so strong, so deeply imprinted on our soul,
go out like a candle in the wind's breath?

  1. Wonderful free verse, Stacy! I ♥ it! :)

I'm not usually into poems - never have been a fan. But yours is a thought provoking and drawing tale.

  2. Thank you Mike. I've written poetry a very long time now but not much lately. I have never liked to write or read poetry that has a hidden meaning. While I am thrilled if a person gets their own meaning from one of my poems, I don't like to write anything that will make a person have to "research" certain words, etc to understand it. Thank you for reading. Since you are not a big fan of poetry it means more that you DID read mine!!
